When we started our first year of the Master’s program, we were given this assignment: “Choose a theme that inspires or resonates with you, and develop a written and visually illustrated report addressing a contemporary issue.” ”Quite naturally, I wanted to talk about agriculture. Having grown up in a family of farmers, it’s a subject I’m directly familiar with and one that particularly resonates with me.

We had to write a thesis of at least 30,000 characters, drawing on various resources. But it wasn’t just about the writing: we also had to design a physical object, conceived as an extension of the thesis, capable of visually conveying its entire identity.

I’ve decided to share part of my story and that of my family, in which farming plays a central role, as I grew up as the daughter and niece of farmers. Our family farm is located in the Ardèche region. When I was little, I witnessed the farm being passed down from my grandfather to my uncle, and today I see that knowledge being passed on to my cousin.  

Through two approaches one personal and the other analytical. I have explored the concept of agricultural transmission in greater depth. To convey this duality, I chose two complementary typefaces. One evokes an almost handwritten style and evokes intimacy, memory, and tradition, while the other, more understated and structured, brings clarity and modernity to the analytical discourse while retaining a certain uniqueness in its forms. To immerse the reader in my story, I used only personal photos.

Writing this thesis really allowed me to connect more deeply with the history of our family farm and to better understand my grandfather’s and uncle’s life journeys. I realized that there are questions I had never dared to ask, and that certain aspects of the profession especially the most difficult ones are often rarely discussed within the family. Today, I feel more involved, and I feel like I have a more accurate and comprehensive view of this reality.
