Goal
This project is the result of a group effort. The goal was to create a music video based on a song chosen by the class. We chose “N95” by Kendrick Lamar. We all brainstormed the video together, then split into pairs to focus on a specific section of the song and develop ideas based on it.
The full music video is the next video.

Concept
In his music, Kendrick primarily critiques the “masks” that people wear in a symbolic sense: the obsession with money, luxury brands, fame, social media, and the image we project. The title refers to the COVID-19 N95 mask, but he uses it as a metaphor for the false facades and egos we use to hide behind.
Overall, we chose to create an artistic direction centered on screens and the control exerted by society. Additionally, in our segment (video below) with my partner, we wanted to represent this oppression through a straitjacket worn by our actor. It was also important for us to mark the song’s calmer moments with a pause where the actor catches his breath.
